Memories – Traces of experienced time
Natural materials, and their traces in the form of video and audio recordings, combine to evoke ideas about something less solid and easy to grasp, human memories. The sound of the sea, the fluctuating image, the very floor on which we are walking, all are constantly changing, dynamic, and yet they remain the same things. The sea is the sea, however much the water of which it is composed is subject to change. The memories we hold on to are never stable, they are liable to change over time.
The visual focus of the piece is the projection onto a field of salt, a material of great symbolic and practical importance in many cultures, and of particular interest in my work. Salt in solution retains the memory of its solid state, to which it may revert. The form of the salt may change while it remains the same substance.
Symbolically and literally salt embodies opposites, it preserves and yet it erodes, it is important for life but at the same time it can be harmful. Salt has no one universal significance, and there is no single intended significance here.
The installation provides a contemplative space in which to reflect on these ideas.
Ίχνη - Μνήμες βιωμένου χρόνου
Φυσικά υλικά και τα ίχνη τους με τη μορφή καταγεγραμμένης εικόνας και ήχου, συνδυασμένα έτσι ώστε να προκαλούν τη μνήμη.
Ο ήχος της θάλασσας, η κινούμενη εικόνα, το δάπεδο πάνω στο οποίο περπατάμε, όλα μεταβάλλονται δυναμικά, αν και παραμένουν ίδια.
Οι μνήμες μας δεν είναι αμετάβλητες. Αλλάζουν, τροποποιούνται με την πάροδο του χρόνου.
Η άμμος και το χαλίκι, υλικά εύπλαστα, διατηρούν και καταγράφουν κάθε πέρασμα.
Το βίντεο προβάλλεται πάνω σε αλάτι, υλικό μεγάλης συμβολικής και πρακτικής άξιας σε πολλούς πολιτισμούς το οποίο με ενδιαφέρει ιδιαίτερα λόγω της “διπλής” του φύσης.
Το αλάτι ενσωματώνει, συμβολικά και πραγματικά τα αντίθετα. Κρατάει την ανάμνηση της στερεής κατάστασης του, στην οποία επανέρχεται, αλλάζει μορφή, παραμένει όμως η ίδια ουσία. Συντηρεί και καταστρέφει είναι σημαντικό για τη ζωή, ενώ μπορεί να αποβεί μοιραίο.
Το αλάτι δεν έχει μόνο μια ερμηνεία, και δεν υπάρχει πρόθεση για μια και μόνη ερμηνεία εδώ.
Η εγκατάσταση δημιουργεί το χώρο για αυτές τις σκέψεις.
